With the recent breaking news about snooker star Stephen Lee involved in match fixing, it got me thinking ''Who can you trust''? I always remember the Olympics in Seoul 1988 when the favourite for the mens 100m sprint Ben Johnson was caught taking anabolic steroids. He destroyed Carl Lewis (USA) in that race but was later caught doping and stripped of his medal. I hear some people suggesting that we should allow everyone take drugs and that it will be a level playing field. This is the most ludicrous thing I have heard and a very dangerous thing to say.
We have to have some level of regulation otherwise what is the point. There have been so many athletes down through the years trying to deceive the authorities and maybe we have missed some and they got away. Who knows, but one things for sure, they can carry on like nothing happened but in the back of their minds they cheated.
Match fixing and taking drugs to improve performance and financial status are both as bad as each other. I am glad that Barry Hearn of World Snooker decided to ban Stephen Lee for over 10 years. Its unacceptable to be doing such a horrible thing to a genuine opponent.
So the moral of the story is Don't take drugs and don't cheat and train harder and everything will work out just fine.
