Footballer Jack Wilshere has reiterated his opinion that naturalised players should not be picked by England, but has insisted that he was not specifically referring to Adnan Januzaj whom he called “a great player”.“The question was should foreign players be allowed to play for England, and in my opinion I don’t think they should!” he said on his twitter feed.
So it raises the question here in Ireland, Should foreign players be allowed play in the National Championships in their respective sports? I have always believed that if a foreign player wishes to play in Open tournaments then that is completely fine, however if they wish to
participate in the National Championships they should have a passport belonging to that country or have lived in the country for atleast 5 years providing an address and tax certificate. I would expect the same format for myself if I was living abroad. For example I know of someone who is a french citizen and has lived in Ireland for over 14 years, does not have an Irish passport (its costs €1000) and so cannot vote in a general election. That's insane.
They have lived here and paid taxes and CANNOT VOTE in a general election. Maybe we need to look at changing the name NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS to IRISH OPEN and then everyone can play. This is a government issue and needs to be resolved so we all know where we stand. Jack Wilshere has raised a valid point.
