Johnny Bowe

I am a former Irish International Table Tennis player and I am a presenter on Q102 Dublin. I have worked for LMFM, NOVA & FM104. I have represented Ireland in Table Tennis at U14, U17 and at Senior Level. I will always remember winning my first competition at 13yrs and then 12 months later playing for the Irish team at the European Youth Championships in Novi Sad 1988 U14 level. That was an incredible learning experience playing against Vladimir Samsonov and Kalin Kreanga. The next year I would go again to the Euro Youth Champs as an U17 player this time in 1989. I was better prepared this time around understanding that I might do well in Ireland but its completely different in Russia, Hungary, Romania and Poland where table tennis was a huge sport and the level was exceptionally high. I would play for Ireland many many times after that in junior events and win domestic competions during the 90's winning the Leinster league with Terenure CYM and taking the indivdual honours too. In 2003 I became National Mixed Doubles Champion with Michelle McGreevy.
I have officially retired from playing Table Tennis but I am coaching now and I really don't have the time to play anymore. I am not able to commit myself to train as I work at the weekends too. It is a very costly sport to play if you are not winning. So if you want to make money then you must play every day and become the best in the country to make a living. Otherwise get your coaching badges and become a coach.
