I've been so busy working on the VIP side to my coaching lately. I have been receiving calls from celebrities to bring them up to a good level so they can beat their buddies at VIP dinner parties and events. Ping Pong is ultra cool now and I am delighted to help out anyone if they need assistance.

I remember playing doubles for the first time in 1986 at a tournament in Dalkey in 1986. It was the Silvermints Competition with big shiny gold medals for the winners. I got partnered off with some guy I never met before. We shook hands and I told him I wanted to win one of the medals. He also agreed and we decided to talk about a plan to win. Bearing in mind we were both 13 and not very experienced we set out to play the first match against two other kids from another school. It was around 9am when we started and at 3pm we had played 6 rounds of matches and then found ourselves in the Final. Needless to say we were feeling a little nervous but I told my partner that if we continue to play with the passion and tactical awareness the medals are ours. We won out 21-10 19-21 22-20. I could have ran home with the excitement and to this day I don't remember who I actually played the final with because he gave up soon after and I never saw him again:( I wonder does he still have his medal? In the last decade the ITTF have unfortunately started to reduce the amount of doubles competitions in International events. This then has an impact at a local and National level because Associations start to wonder is their much point placing emphasis on events that are not taken to seriously. I always entered Doubles on my entry forms for senior and junior events when I was a player. I would usually call some player at my level and ask them to enter my name on their entry form and visa versa. That means I would take control over my own entry and not have my coach or trainer doing it for me which defeats independence and stops a player from taking responsibility. Doubles is FUN, TACTICAL, STRATEGICAL and gets you and your partner thinking more about how to win and overcome your opponents. I have recently asked the Manager of Dundrum Club to implement a new Doubles Event called FRIDAY NIGHT DOUBLES to see if we can get some good doubles partners to start enjoying the game and to progress. Get out there and start playing doubles and most of all GOOD LUCK!!! JB For many athletes nowadays, the attraction that ''I have to be on Facebook or Twitter'' ideology is becoming rather damaging to players in all sports. It is important to point out straight away that you don't have to be on anything like that to be successful. Certainly for top athletes having a website presence or Facebook page is more for commercial reasons and maybe for updating fans on where your next event is etc. The new manager of Manchester Utd Louis Van Gaal has banned mobile phones and the use of social media on the night before a match. He obviously saw that the phones were distracting players from the focus of the match. Most top athletes have management who update their various social media accounts but some want control themselves on what they post. QPR footballer Joey Barton is obsessed with Twitter and to be honest if I was his coach we would have already had the chat about this situation. I walked into a sports centre recently in Dublin and 6 out of the 8 athletes that were there were all on their phones. They were on a break but seriously it looked sad! Remember if you want to reach the top in any job or occupation you must focus on what your good at and don't let others or social media distract you from your goals. We are human beings, not robots. Get back to talking face to face and calling someone. Its great for your communication skills and that person might just appreciate it. JB Just recently the Dundrum Table Tennis Club held its first Summer Camp for anyone wanting to begin playing table tennis or to players of Intermediate and Advanced level. The camp was a great success and we look forward to many more in the future. I would firstly like to thank Marcus McDonnell, Roman Pszonka and all the players who participated in the camp. Nadal leads Roger 23-10 in head to head meetings. Why do you think that Nadal beats Federer with such ease? and why does Nadal not fear his opponent? These are questions that need to be answered and I am going to analyze both strenghts and weaknesses of both players. In Nadal's 2nd round match at Wimbledon 2014 he came up against Czech player Lukasz Rosol. Rosol had beaten him two years ago on centre court in a shock upset and Nadal wanted revenge this time around. One of the first things I noticed in Rosol's approach to the match this time around was the way he use psychology against Nadal. Nadal always likes to take his time, placing his bottles of water in the exact same spot beside his feet while sitting down. Nadal always comes out to the court 2nd from beside the umpires chair so he can receive the loudest cheer. Rosol decided to wait for Nadal to go out first and Nadal kept waiting for his opponent to get up and start the warm up first but Rosol kept playing a clever game and waited until Nadal finally got up reluctantly to start the warm up. This is exactly the approach needed to beat Nadal and that is what Federer needs to start implementing in to his game. It is probably not his type of thing to do but to be honest his record against the Spanish giant is very poor and as a coach I would suggest that Federer starts getting into Nadal's head instead of the other way around. When we start to look at the style of play that both have it becomes apparent that Rafa imposes his game plan on Federer everytime. Nadal likes to loop his forehand drives into Fed's backhand which Federer loops back with to much height and then Nadal steps around the backhand to drive his forehand for a winner. When Djokovic or Murray use the two handed backhand flat hit, Nadal doesn't like this at all and struggles to get into a rhythm. For Federer to win next Friday should the two meet he will have to use some small psychology, will have to serve more aces and will have to play more forehand drives including volleys too. If all this can be implemented then Roger will have a good chance to beat his nemesis. JB England's woes at the World Cup 2014 continued with their swift exit from the World Cup. Before Roy Hodgson picked his team I was astonished at the non selection of John Terry in defence. Not only is John a great defensive player, he is a leader amongst men and of course he is not everyone's cup of tea but who cares. If I am a team manager I want the best team mentally aswell as physical ability. Leaving out Terry was only the beginning of the problems to come. I am convinced bringing Jermain Defoe would have been a positive move. I can never understand omitting players with leadership qualities especially when you select 11 guys to a job for you and 10 of them don't have the clout to the get the job done. The England team of 1990 with Gary Lineker, Paul Gasgoigne and David Platt would not have gone home at the group stage, therefore I ask the question, ''Is Wayne Rooney the only world class player England have''? If the answer is Yes then they have a massive problem. I also believe young star players do not have much respect for ageing gentlemen like Roy Hodgson because they do not know who he is. Did he play football? Did he win honours at football? Did he represent England? Questions Questions...... and in training if you cannot demonstrate to players directly what you expect them to do, then its curtains and they just switch off. I know the argument to that question will be ''What about Sir Alex''? Well Sir Alex ran UTD like a dictatorship but he WON trophies so if you can win trophies who cares?. Roy has won nothing in his career, well nothing of substantial value so young players do not believe he can motivate them or help them aspire to the next level. The schedule of fixtures in English football is a joke. The season is the longest in all world leagues and by the time the prem players reach a big championship they are physically exhausted. Going forward that will all have to change. Maybe a few weeks break at Christmas and not playing on Christmas Eve or St Stephen's/Boxing Day. England need stronger players who are mentally tougher. They need better guidance and training methods, and they need to start winning trophies otherwise the pressure will get even more immense. JB No need to travel abroad for training now as Myself, Marcus McDonnell, Colum Slevin and Gavin Maguire will be coaching at the Dundrum Table Tennis Summer Camp 2014 at the end of July. Dundrum Table Tennis Club St Benildus College Kilmacud Road Upper Stillorgan Co. Dublin For Registration please follow the link below Dundrum Table Tennis Summer Camp 2014 I am proud of my High School boys who won Senior Boys Leinster League U18 div 2 and Minor Boys U15 div 3 respectively. I have been training the first years and fifth and Sixth form for the last year within the Reynold's Hall of the school. The school have been magnificent in supporting my project. Every athlete has to start somewhere and winning these divisions is the beginning of something new. Even the U15 team had there own team talk before the final match discussing tactics and doubles strategy if the match would be decided on the final doubles. I have tried to teach this type of approach to the players and it is so satisfying to see them do it without me having to repeat myself. I would like to thank Evan, Colm, Eric, Deni, Asher, Niall, Philip, Daragh, Elliot & Ken for the 100% effort put in to achieve this success. The funding from the Irish Table Tennis Association was instrumental in getting this project up and running and now the school are 100% backing it. Hopefully we can win more medals and trophies in the future. JB |
